The future of meat replacement
According to a consumer survey by Innova Market Insights (2021), consumers are more open to new technologies now that they have seen where it has brought plant-based innovation (41%). In addition, consumers are more curious about cell-based meat (40%) than lab-grown meat (39%) and 3D printed meat (37%), which is based on another consumer survey by Innova Market Insights (2022).
The budding cell-cultured meat segment still faces some challenges. For example, cultured meats still rely on some animal-derived ingredients, particularly fetal bovine serum without which the cells won’t readily duplicate. This is an issue for vegetarians and vegans, making cultured meat in its current form ethically unacceptable to them. Once this is overcome, it will broaden the target audience.
