Alternative meat proteins

Protein plays a critical role in human nutrition. Although animal-derived proteins constitute the majority of the protein we consume, there is a strong movement in the industry towards plant-derived proteins which can satisfy the same requirement with arguably less environmental impact.
The future of protein consumption is likely to be flexitarian, with one in four consumers globally identifying as "meat reducers" or "flexitarians," and one in five consumers avoiding meat altogether (Innova Trends Survey 2024). Reflecting this shift, a wide range of alternative proteins is gaining traction. While plant-based proteins experienced growth (+5%, 2020–2024), cultured and microbial-based proteins are showing even higher growth (+15%, 2020–2024).
Meat substitutes and ready meals & side dishes are the top categories for F&B launches with a cultured and microbial based protein:
Top category | % share (global, 2022 - 2024) |
---|---|
Meat substitutes | 43% |
Ready meals & side dishes | 13% |
Desserts & ice cream | 11% |
Dairy | 9% |
Bakery | 6% |
