Analysis of THC and CBD

Cannabis was long considered a niche ingredient, but in recent years it has quickly achieved a position as a superfood. Food with and from hemp is currently the talk of the town. However, the use of hemp products or specific ingredients such as cannabidiols (CBD) can lead to questions regarding marketability. In this context, it is necessary to deal with the Novel Food and the Health Claims Regulation as well as the risk assessments of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). In addition to know-how in assessment, however, special analytics are also required: This includes, for example, the determination of the active ingredients THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid from the hemp plant besides THC as a known substance. According to current knowledge CBD does not have a psychoactive effect. CBD is said to have positive properties: relief from pain, depression or insomnia.

CBD is therefore mainly used in dietary supplements and aromatic oils, but is also found in hemp seeds, hemp oil and hemp tea.
