The Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVL) will once again present current innovative topics and projects from the trade at Anuga 2009. This year's focus will be on sustainable trade. Sustainable fishing will be in the limelight as a model project for the many initiatives being pursued in the sector. Representatives of the trade and the fishing industry will present voluntary initiatives that are helping to preserve fish stocks. The measures being taken include a more precise identification of fishing areas and the creation of a database documenting the fish stock situation, which aims to make it easier for buyers to purchase fish from sustainably managed fish stocks. The partners of the project are the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute (vTI - Bundesinstitut), Fisch-Informationszentrum e. V. (FIZ) and the Bizerba company.
The food hotel Neuwied will be presented as an example of the basic and advanced training being offered by the trade. This will be the first time the food hotel will be presented to the general public since its cornerstone was laid in May 2009. In spring 2010, this unique theme hotel will be opened within the complex of the Federal College of the Food Trade (Bundesfachschule des Lebensmittelhandels) in Neuwied. For the hotel guests, design elements from the area of shop fittings will transform the world of the supermarket into a top-class hotel. All of the rooms in the hotel will be designed to correspond to individual product areas; from the reception area to the conference room, the hotel will be designed to create the atmosphere of an exclusive supermarket. At the Trade Innovation Show, visitors to Anuga will be able to find out about this unique theme hotel by taking a look at a number of exemplary projects connected with the hotel.
The forum participants will once again include various quality assurance initiatives such as GlobalGAP, IFS, Orgainvent and QS. At the innovation show, GlobalGAP will present new criteria for the certification of fish raised in aquacultures. In this project GlobalGAP is cooperating closely with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Food merchants need to find ways to get a jump on their competitors. Meanwhile, consumers are looking for practical alternatives, in supermarkets and elsewhere. The best solution for both groups is a diverse assortment of organic products.
At the "Fully Organic" special show, organic foods will be expertly presented for the fourth time since Anuga 2003, in cooperation with the editors of bioPress. In addition to the approximately 1,600 exhibitors offering organic products and the more than 300 exhibitors of exclusively organic products in the Anuga Organic hall, visitors will also find more than 2,000 organic products for the food retail trade concentrated in the "Fully Organic" special show.
The number of outlets offering a basic assortment of organic foods has risen to several tens of thousands. The retail food trade provides German consumers today with a comprehensive range of organic products. In the next step, attention will be directed to unusual full ranges of organic foods. "Fully Organic" is now becoming the future agenda of food retail traders. And nothing reflects the latest developments in the organic product range of the retail food trade as clearly as the special show at Anuga Organic.
